Eric Kelly + Bae Yong Kwon = Remarkable Fight!
One Fighting Championship “Destiny of Warriors” event will feature a featherweight fight between South Korea’s ranked no.2 Featherweight fighter, Bae Yong “Serial Killer” Kwon and former URCC featherweight king Eric “The Natural” Kelly that’s set for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on June 23rd, 2012. With an amazing record of 6-0, Kelly is widely considered as one of the best featherweight fighters in the Philippines and arguably in Asia. Kwon in the other hand, is considered as the second best featherweight in Korea, just next to the “Korean Zombie”, Chan Sung Jung.
Bae Yong Kwon comes into this fight with a career record of (7-2) with 2 wins via TKO/KO, 3 submission wins and 2 via unanimous decision. He was last seen submitting URCC lightweight champion Honorio “The Rock” Banario via rear-naked choke in his ONE FC debut last February in Indonesia. Kwon is currently riding on a three-fight win streak. Kwon is well rounded and has only been stopped once out of his 2 losses.
Eric Kelly comes into this fight with an unblemished record of 6-0 with all of his wins came via first round submissions. Kelly was last seen winning his One FC debut against Mitch Chilson via 1st round RNC, which took place at ONE FC 1: Champion vs. Champion.
Kelly Vs. Chilson during ONE FC 1: Champion vs. Champion
After beating Chilson, Kelly has been off the scene due to some personal issues. It has been a super tough eight months for the Filipino featherweight standout as his fighting career became stagnant and very controversial. Although he has been a hot topic lately, Kelly’s attention as of the moment is on Bea Young Kwon.
Kelly has faced dangerous fighters before in Mitch Chilson and Nate Flores while winning in convincing fashion. So I doubt that Kwon will bring anything to the table that he hasn’t seen before. Even though Kwon will enjoy a two inch height advantage on the feet, Kelly will more than likely look to counter an aggressive Kwon while looking for opportunities to take him down. If he’s successful in taking Kwon down, he should be able to do damage from the top position while looking for submission opportunities. Kwon is well versed on the ground and hasn’t been submitted in MMA.
Kwon simply needs to keep this fight on the feet and try to out strike Kelly. Kwon isn’t one to look for takedowns often, so he’ll have the challenge of trying to hit an elusive Kelly, who is a former member of the Philippine Wushu Sanshou national team.
Kwon got bombs in his hands!
This one will probably play out as a battle for domain. Kwon would like to keep it standing and look for the knockout. Kelly wants to make it a grappling competition, where he feels his skills edge out those of Kwon.
Kelly may be able to drag the fight to the mat, but it won’t be easy for him once he gets it there.
This fight is one of those match-ups that I’m looking forward to see. We really can’t say who has the edge for this fight because both warriors are equally talented in every aspect of the game. I really cannot wait for this one!
