Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight contender Mark Muñoz will battle Chael Sonnen in the promotion’s second show on FOX network on January 28 in Chicago, Illinois.
According to MMA Mania, the winner of the bout will get the chance to challenge UFC’s middleweight king, Anderson Silva, for the title.
Muñoz, known as “The Filipino Wrecking Machine,” stormed his way into title contention by winning four straight bouts, including a second round technical knockout win over the hard-hitting Chris Leben at UFC 138.
But Sonnen will be the biggest challenge yet for the Filipino mixed martial artist. Sonnen was the last man to give Silva a challenge inside the Octagon, dominating the champion for four rounds at UFC 117 before succumbing to a triangle choke late in the fifth round.
Sonnen marked his return to the UFC with a strong performance against Brian Stann at UFC 136, and proceeded to challenge Silva in his post-fight interview.
Silva is out until June 2012, however, due to a shoulder injury, paving the way for a number one contender match between Muñoz and Sonnen.
Both fighters seem to be eager to put on a show in their fight, with Sonnen tweeting Muñoz: “Hey @Mark_Munoz what do you say we give em a show. For ole (sic) times sake…”
Muñoz replied, “@sonnench Yes sir! I know we will give them a show! Let’s show them how it’s done!”
Sonnen and Muñoz have wrestled against each other during their college days, with Sonnen representing the University of Oregon and Muñoz representing Oklahoma State University.
Muñoz claimed that he “end up beating (Sonnen) pretty handily.”
